Organic SEO Checklist

This quick organic SEO chechlist is has been created purely to help you ensure that your website has a solid foundation for any SEO campaign you might want to launch.

For example, we don't go into too much detail about meta data or rel canonical links or even density as this is more in depth SEO. However, without the basics the rest of the organic SEO work you do is based on shaky foundations so here we cover the basics for you.

Page Speed

You may well be using shared hosting and for this reason your website may well be loading slowly. You can test your page speed on websites such as Pingdom Website Speed Test to see how quickly your website loads. Personally I wouldn't take these figures to heart but they will give you a good indication of how fast your web server is. A good trick here is to put what's referred to as the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) into the test bar to see not only how long the server takes to respond but also how quickly the redirect to the "www" version of the website is redirected.

You can also look at your Analytics to see how many people leave your website without looking at a 2nd page. This is the "Bounce Rate" and typically this is higher for websites with slow page load speeds as people simply leave because they have to wait too long for a page to load.

Also bear in mind that page delivery speed (how quickly the page is sent from the server) and page receipt speeds can vary wildly. If your user is on a mobile connection for example the speed that they receive the page may well be slower than expected. One way around this is to turn off certain elements for mobile users to enhance their experience.

Title Tag

This is the title that shows up at the top of the browser window when someone browses to your website. For example "Smith's Shoes" (yes, I do like my cobblers). This is hidden within the meta data of your website and should also be consistent with the content.

Description Tag

This is a small piece of descriptive text about your website. Typically no more than 160 characters. Something like "Smith's Shoes, hand made leather shoes created to help you put the right foot forward." A little thing you can do here is even add a telephone number at the end (within the characters limit of-course) so that when people search for you that contact number displays in the results pages thus making it easier for them to get in touch.

H1 Tag

This is basically the primary header tag. The title for your website. Again, this should be consistent and there should only be one.

"Smith's Shoes" would be an obvious choice here but you could also use something like "Handmade Shoes" or "Bespoke Shoes in Chester". The key is consistency.
