Domain Name

What's in a domain name…?

Well. You could just as easily say "What's in a name…?" it's an identity, pure and simple. It does have an importance with regards to SEO but that importance is not independent of all the other elements of SEO. For example, you wouldn't use the domain name "" to sell poodle accessories. The domain name must reflect your business in some way. If not, this will not only spell disaster for your business but will probably lead to search engines blacklisting your site.

Also, a domain name uniquely identifies your company on the web. No other company may share your domain name. It's yours and yours alone. Others may have similar domain names, may even try to imitate your domain name but this then becomes the subject (in the UK) of copyright infringement and is not covered here in any detail.

Domain names should incorporate the following elements:

  • Reflect the business or service you are offering
  • Be easy to spell
  • Be easy to remember

The fact that a domain name should reflect your business has already been covered but why make a domain name easy to spell…? Why make it easy to remember…? After all, you would be e-mailing this domain name wouldn't you…? Not necessarily. For example, think of a domain for a company that sells pet accessories. Is that one "c" or two…? One "s" or two…? Perhaps a better option might be to use a domain such as ""…? or even "". basically something that's easy to remember, easy to recall and just as important: something that's punchy, short and identifies with your business simultaneously.

Just as much thought should be placed in choosing a domain name as the business name you own, if not more. This is your "shop front" on the web and must reflect the image you would like to portray.
